Choosing a Ventilation System

We’ll help you to choose the right ventilation system for your property

Why Ventilate?

Ventilation removes stale or moist air from your home and replaces it with fresh air from the outside. Modern building regulations require homes to achieve high levels of airtightness, and whilst this is good news for energy efficiency, insufficient ventilation can lead to the build-up of moisture causing condensation and mould, or allow allergens or harmful environmental gases such as radon to accumulate to levels that could be harmful to your health.

Why does Mould Form?

Mould doesn’t always build up in where you expect. This diagram illustrates how moisture created by cooking or bathing can cause problems in other parts of your home. Warm air has the ability to carry more moisture than colder air. Here the arrows show the flow of warm moist air through the property. As the air comes into contact with the colder external wall or windows, the dew point drops and condensation droplets form; perfect conditions for spots of black mould (Aspergillus Niger) to grow.

Adequate ventilation can help by:

  • Preventing the build-up of excess humidity, the cause of condensation and mould
  • Removing cooking smells, unpleasant odours and stale air
  • Helping remove allergens and other irritants from the home, such as tobacco smoke or particulates from wood burners
